Tips and
Tricks
If you use firefox as your regular browser, start a firefox browser session and then invoke the launcher application(which will open on a new window). This ensures that automatic webpage opens are directed to your 'Normal' browser session rather than the application launcher browser session.
Close the launcher application as soon as your present operation is complete. This ensures that launcher application does not hog memory and other resources unnecessarily. Also starting the launcher application afresh for the next operation ensures that it identifies the current state accurately.
Give sufficient time( 15 - 30 seconds) for the launcher application to respond with results.
If you encounter an error, restart the launcher application.
Accessing the OpenSim.exe console
If you ssh to the OpenSim server, you will be logged in as root. You can access the the OpenSim.exe console using the command:
screen -r simond/Opensim
For a comprehensive list of commands you can issue in the OpenSim.exe console consult the OpenSimulator Server Commands wiki page.
If accessing via VNC you will be logged in as the user named 'simond'. You will be able to access the OpenSim.exe console using the command:
screen -r Opensim
Working
with Elastic Fox
Installing and using ElasticFox firefox extension for EC2 instance management and cross verification is hightly recommended. Here is a link to the user guide(pdf) You will find elastic fox handy when there are complications with your server. Like for example if the EBS volume is not detached properly.
Accessing OpenSim server via VNC
The OpenSim server
is accessible through VNC. You can either use a VNC client program( like UltraVNC, or SSVNC etc) or via java enabled web browser.
The browser based vnc is secured via ssl.( accessible via http://hostname:5800/ultrasigned.vnc
where hostname is to be substituted by the actual hostname of the
opensim server instance) The client based unsecured VNC is accessible
via http://hostname:5801
When connecting via browser, few security, certificate related prompts are to be manually overridden.
The same password you set for Master Avatar is used for vnc authentication too.
File transfer via the browser based vnc will be handy to transfer files to and from your local PC. Useful when you wish to transfer region terrain files for example.
Troubleshooting
Set your PC's clock and time zone accurately. Skew in clock settings could result in sluggish AWS API performance or failure.
