Sim-OnDemand has many useful and interesting features apart from the Play-Pause-Play based server activation and suspension.
Here are the highlights:
  • The number of regions in the OpenSim server can be configured.
  • The master avatar login credentials can be configured.[Same password allows browser based VNC access to the Linux server]
  • The processing and memory capacity of the EC2 server can be configured for each run.
  • Browser based VNC access: Access the server via Java enabled browser. Much easier than mucking with ssh and keys. Access through non-browser based VNC client is also possible. [ The browser based vnc is secured via ssl.( accessible via http://hostname:5800/ultrasigned.vnc  where hostname is to be substituted by the actual hostname of the opensim server instance) The client based unsecured VNC is accessible via http://hostname:5801
      Note: When connecting via browser, few security, certificate related prompts are to be manually overridden.
    ]
  • File transfer via browser based VNC. This is handy for transferring say terrain files from local computer to the server.
  • On each run, a new IP address and hostname is assigned by Amazon. Shortcuts( loginuri settings) are to be updated with the new hostname. In order to make the shortcuts constant, an alias name is setup for each configuration. When an instance is alive, this constant alias will map to the current hostname.
  • OpenSim as a rapidly evolving opensource software needs periodic updating. The launcher UI has an option to upgrade to latest server. Idea here is to save the Sim-OnDemand subscriber from the minute details of migrating from one version to another. Make the transition as smooth as possible.
  • Runaway instance prevention. When two are more copies of Sim-OnDemand launcher is used, there is a chance that the user might inadvertently forget to pause one installation. To prevent such inadvertent runaway instance, the launcher UI warns about other EC2 instances running. This feature along with access to AWS EC2 Console will effectively counter runaway instances.
